Pull back from the machine

Introduction

Recently my older brother stumbled upon a AI documentation generator called DeepWiki, and shared a full documentation of my Scrite project he generated using it. DeepWiki can parse the source code of any project hosted on a public Git repository like GitHub and construct documentation explaining the architecture and implementation.

Benefits of AI-Documentation

Back in the day, we had to write code comments and neatly name our functions and files, so that we could run a tool like Doxygen to parse them all, pull out code comments, and construct comprehensive cross-referenced documentation. Now, with tools like DeepWiki, that kind of discipline may no longer be necessary.

Real-World Applications

Just last month, at the FOSSUnited city meetup, there was a talk from two interns at Bharath Digital, where they described a project they were working on, which involved using LLM tools to automatically generate documentation for a lot of public technology, which is usually either not documented at all or not updated in years.

There is clearly a value proposition to using AI documentation.

Considerations and Concerns

At the moment, all documentation generated by these AI tools is reviewed for accuracy. Since these tools are new, there is a healthy skepticism about the output they churn. So there is a manual review process, which is great!

However, much like all other AI adoption, we will eventually head into an era where skepticism will give way to mild trust and eventually total trust. Manual review will go for a toss, and whatever description of code the AI tools give will be considered the gospel of truth.

History Repeats

When human beings showed up, we probably were aware of the body-mind-machinery, so we were in general, skeptical about its ability to accurately model and interpret the world. Over time, we got lazy —and we took its moment-by-moment interpretation of the world as the gospel of truth, without any review or reconsideration.

The Impact on Human Experience

In the absence of review or reconsideration, we assume the body-mind-machinery’s model and interpretation of the world to be real, and worse, we take it to be a Self!

When the body-mind-machinery generates fear and attracts thoughts of fear, we believe it to be real and that it is there for a reason.

When the body-mind-machinery generates anger and attracts thoughts of anger, we believe it to be real and that it is there for a reason.

When the body-mind-machinery generates inspiration and good mood and attracts good and positive thoughts; we believe that also to be real and that they are there for a reason.

We have lost the ability to retain the space between Self and the body-mind-machinery.

Conclusion

I am hearing a lot of doomsday prediction stories with the advent of AI. They say AI will do this, will destroy that, will take over jobs, humanity, and so on.

I, for one, am optimistic that AI will reveal the basic error in human beings. We will get to watch how we went from knowing the machine to being the machine. Just the recognition of that will bring a huge transformation in  the human experience.
